THEME of the Festival is `Celebrate the Rainbow Sea’ 

Objectives:
  • To bring international attention to the marine environment such as ecology and diversity of coral atolls in the Indian Ocean. 
  • To promote preservation of sharks, turtles and Napoleon wrasse. 
  • The event’s ambition is to capture unique and geographically diverse images of seascapes, animal portraits and behavioral observations. The winning imagery must excite and touch the senses of the panel of judges and viewer participants from all over the world. 

Yes, the nation of waving palms, white sand beaches and rainbow reefs is the host country for the most exciting event of the sea for new millennium.Scheduled for the optimum season to visit the Maldives, the festival comprises of diving, educational seminars, marine awareness lectures, coral reef interpretation workshops, photographic workshops, parties and there are over US$50,000 in cash and holiday prizes for photo, video and marine awareness competitions.The premier award for the Best Photographer of the Festival is US$5000 cash.Scheduled for the optimum season to visit the Maldives, the festival comprises of diving, educational seminars, marine awareness lectures, coral reef interpretation workshops, photographic workshops, parties and there are over US$50,000 in cash and holiday prizes for photo, video and marine awareness competitions.The premier award for the Best Photographer of the Festival is US$5000 cash. Participants will discover the reefs of the Maldives are very much alive and vibrant, and with the density of fish the Maldives is known as being the aquarium of the Indian Ocean.

For the first week of the festival (April 3 – 8), participants may choose to be diving from one of the supporting resorts or cruise the atolls on one of the participating safari boats. The purpose of this week is for non-competitive participants to wind down and enjoy the coral reefs, the sun and the sea.For the video and photographic competitors, this is the period for them to capture images for the shoot-out competition.

For the second week (April 8 – 12), all participants shall convene at Paradise Island Resort; the host resort for the festival.Activities for this week include diving, lectures, movies, workshops, marine awareness competition, parties and the award ceremony.Photographic and video competitors shall submit their entries for the respective competitions on April 9. The images shall be uploaded to the web for a worldwide viewer competition. 

One of the highlights of the event is the launching of NAPWATCH - Napoleon Wrasse Monitoring Program by OceanNEnvironment in the Maldives. The festival endorsed and supported by the Maldives Tourism Promotion Board.

The Festival Packages

The festival package for safari boats on the first week comprises of twin share accommodation 12 dives, full board (3meals per day) and transfers.Cruising itinerary may include North Male, South Male, North Ari, Felidhoo and South Ari atolls.

The festival package for resort base on the first week comprises of 8 boat dives (boat fares included), 2 shore dives, twin share accommodation, full board and speed boat transfer. Dive sites restricted to choice of resort.

For the second week, the package at Paradise Island Resort includes: 6 boat dives, 2 shore dives, twin share accommodation, full board (3 meals per day), entries to lectures and workshops, entry to award ceremony, lecture notes, festival T-shirt.As the festival has only limited allotments from the resorts, participants are advised to make early reservations.

GENERAL conditions

  • Open to photographers of any country. 
  • All competing images must be shot during the first week of the festival. 
  • The organizer reserves all right to entries for promotional and related use in reproduction materials. All originals will be returned by to competitors after August 2000. 
  • Touching and physically moving any animals is prohibited. 
  • The organizer holds no responsibilities for any claims or complaints from the model used in winning images. The responsibilities are of the submitting photographers. 
  • Whilst all possible care will be taken in handling all entries and film for processing, the committee will not assume any responsibilities in the event of loss, damage due to processing, accident or theft. 
  • The decision of the panel is final and no communication will be entered into. The judging committee is under no obligation to award all placements in any particular category if general standard is below international photography standard. 
Cat 3 - Portfolio
  • Photographers use their own films (E6 slides only) but must be processed at the event by the organizer. ENTRY fee is US$ 100 including processing – maximum 10 rolls. NO additional rolls allowed. 
  • Competitors must submit 4 images for judging – one of wide angle (seascape), one macro and one animal behavior and one of own choice. Detailed criteria to be advised on site. 
  • OceanNEnvironnemnt Portfolio Award = Photographer of the Festival Award – US$5000 Cash Prize 

  • More cash and holiday prizes for this section will be announced at a later stage. Prizes awarded to top 5 competitors. 
  • Photographers participating in this section MAY NOT participate in the Novice section. 

Cat 1 & 2 

  • Photographers use their own films (E6 slides only). ENTRY fee is US$ 50 including processing – maximum 5 rolls only. NO additional rolls allowed. 
  • Competitors may compete in any of this categories but limited to submit 2 images per category. Wide angle, Macro.  Detailed criteria to be advised on site. 
  • Prizes for this section will be announced later. Prizes awarded to top 2 competitors of each category.
